The human remainder
After the intern has drafted, mapped, and argued, something should still be left that only you could have put there. If nothing is left, you were the intern.
The remainder is an observation from a room, a refusal from your file, a minute with a name on it. Guard it. That is the whole college in one pocket.

Tools will keep getting faster. The gap that remains is not intelligence. It is having been there, and caring who pays.

The audit
Print the one-pager. Strike every line a model could have written without leaving a desk. If the page goes blank, you do not have a remainder. You have a well-prompted intern with your name on the door.
What survives is usually small: a number from a shift, a phrase a cook used, a judge's fear, a constraint you suffered. Small is the point. Small is what rooms believe.
How to get more
Leave the desk. Watch a minute. Write the embarrassing thing. Talk to the person who will be blamed and shut up long enough to hear the noun they use, not the noun in the brief.
You cannot prompt your way into remainder. You can only go and get it, then refuse to dilute it with architecture.
Into the room
Hackathons in 2026 are full of fluent stacks and empty remainders. That is the opportunity. Walk in with a mean brief, a kill zone, three chairs, a still frame, and one thing you saw. The intern can help you hold the knife. It cannot see.

Drill
Audit a live one-pager. Strike intern lines. Add one observation you had to leave a desk to get. If you cannot add it today, schedule the hour you will go and get it — that hour is the work.
